Natural Abundance

A Seven-Week Exploration of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Guide to Prosperity

Man was born to be rich, or inevitably grows rich by the use of his faculties; by the union of thought with nature. – from Emerson’s 1860 lecture “Wealth, the Conduct of Life”

Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of America’s most influential spiritual and philosophical thinkers. A 19th-century essayist, poet, lecturer, and leading voice of Transcendentalism, his ideas helped lay the foundation for the New Thought movement, which includes Unity. Emerson explored the divine potential within each person, our connection with nature, and how our inner consciousness shapes our experience of life.

In this seven-week study of Natural Abundance, we have a wonderful opportunity to encounter Emerson both in his own words and through a contemporary lens.

The book contains five of Emerson’s original essays, preserving his authentic 19th-century writings. Each essay is accompanied by Dr. Ruth L. Miller’s interpretation of Emerson’s ideas, expressed in clear, modern language for the 21st-century reader. This allows us to experience the richness of Emerson’s original thought while also exploring what his teachings can mean in our lives today.

Rev. Dale Worley guides the class through these five essays as we explore Emerson’s understanding of abundance, consciousness, nature, self-reliance, and the creative power of our thoughts, words, and actions.

Together, we will explore this question: What becomes possible when we recognize the abundance already present within us and learn to live from it?

The book Natural Abundance is available for purchase in the Unity bookstore and will also be available on the first night of class.
